Kona Honu Divers Going Green

Respect the
Environment
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Professional
Conduct
As active members of the Hawaiian Island Recreational Scuba Association, we ask our divers to take the following pledge.
I will :

Follow all applicable State and Federal laws related to marine life and protected areas.

Be respectful to all marine life.

Make every effort to not touch, stand, kick, or rest on corals.

Never chase, harass, flush from shelter or relocate marine life.

Not feed fish or other marine life.

Keep a respectful distance from turtles and never chase them, block their path or try to ride them.

Secure dive flags to the sandy bottom using weights or other anchoring device or tie off to non-living surfaces.

Be extra careful if taking photos or videos, being aware of the reef and respectful of the marine life.

Look before touching the bottom for balance, making sure it is non-living substrate and when absolutely necessary using only one or two fingers for contact.

Minimize glove use unless required by a medical condition, for thermal protection, or for safety.

Reduce Reuse Recycle

We are in the process of minimizing any negative impact we have on the environment. Steps we have already taken include:

  • Eliminating plastic water bottles and soda cans - we have implemented a water filtration system and now provide fresh, cold, pure kona drinking water on our charters and have eliminated the waste created by consuming bottled water and cans of soda.
  • Switching to long life, energy efficient light bulbs in the shop to reduce consumption and waste.
  • We promote the reuse of drinking cups on the boat and provide a recycle bin for any plastic bottles and cans brought aboard by our guests.

Here at Kona Honu Divers, we do our best to respect the environment and minimize the impact we have on it. We observe best practices in utilizing the current mooring system (no anchor drops in over 3 years!) and are actively taking part in several environmental agency attempts to self impose regulations for the benefit of the local reefs and to assure that the marine environment here is Kona will be sustained for the enjoyment of future generations for years to come.
Specifically, we abide by the guidelines spelled out by the Manta Pacific Research Foundation when conducting our Manta Ray Night Dive. We also have been working with the Coral Reef Alliance with regard to wildlife interaction and special guidelines focused on non intrusive dolphin viewing/swimming activities.
