Tom Tatum

USCG Captain

Growing up in Southern California, I  started diving at age 11 and have never stopped. Around twelve years of age, I dove around Catalina Island & Divers Cove in Laguna. When we moved to Northern California, I started diving around Monterey & the Sonoma Coast in California.  Later when I went to college at the University of Miami, Florida and managed to do some diving in the Keys as well as the Bahamas.  I moved to Kona to help run the only dive shop on the Kona Coast, Hawaiian Divers, in 1970.  I also became a NAUI instructor that same year.  Three years later I moved back to California to run the family restaurant business; my diving then consisted of trips to the Channel Islands aboard the Truth, Conception and other boats. In 1990 I sold my share of the family business and fulfilled my dream of sailing the South Pacific aboard my 45 ft. cutter with my 2 sons and some friends. I experienced some great dives in the Tuamotus Islands, Society Islands and the Tonga Group. We got as far a New Zealand then we came back to California. I moved back to Kona in 2001 and now enjoy driving boats for a living. I plan to continue to do so.   I married my darling wife, Lupe, in 2011. Life is good.
